About Los Haitises
Los Haitises is a national park at the far end of Samaná Bay. You see it from a boat, going in through the channels between the mangroves to the caves along the shore, where Taíno rock paintings are still preserved. The mogotes, those limestone hills standing in the water, are the park’s most recognisable image.
It is a protected area: the route runs with a guide and along authorised paths only.

What to bring
- Insect repellent. It is a mangrove forest: there are mosquitoes, especially early and late in the day
- Closed shoes that can get wet. The cave floors are rock and are sometimes damp
- A light rain layer. It rains often in the park, in short showers
- Water. The trip is long and there is nowhere to buy anything inside the park
- A case for your phone or camera. The caves and mangroves are photographed from the boat, and it splashes
