How to get to Samaná and the Santa Bárbara pier

Every one of our boat trips leaves from the same place: the pier in Santa Bárbara de Samaná. This guide explains how to get to the Samaná peninsula from Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and the local airport, and then to the pier itself, with distances and estimated driving times so you can plan the day honestly.

First, the geography

Samaná is a peninsula in the north-east of the Dominican Republic, and Santa Bárbara de Samaná is its main town, on the bay side. The pier where the boats leave is in that town. Las Terrenas and Las Galeras, where many visitors stay, are also on the peninsula, but on the north coast and at the eastern tip respectively: from either, reaching the pier is a drive across the peninsula, not a walk.

The main road in from the rest of the country is the RD-7, known as the Autopista del Nordeste: 107 kilometres of toll road, inaugurated in 2008, with toll plazas at Marbella, Naranjal and Guaraguao, a speed limit of 80 km/h, and a stretch that crosses Los Haitises National Park. It connects to the Boulevard Turístico del Atlántico, which runs along the coast from Nagua into the peninsula, with a toll near El Catey. If you are driving, budget for the tolls in cash.

Distances and estimated times to the pier

The figures below are distances by road and an estimated driving time, calculated on a routing service without traffic. In the mountains and with roadworks it can take longer. Use them to plan, not to set your watch by.

• Las Terrenas: 38 km, about 1 hour.
• Las Galeras: 29 km, about 1 hour.
• El Limón: 25 km, about 45 minutes.
• Sánchez: 33 km, about 40 minutes.
• El Catey airport (AZS): 47 km, about 1 hour.
• Santo Domingo (Zona Colonial): 165 km, about 3 hours.
• Las Américas airport, Santo Domingo (SDQ): 161 km, about 3 hours.
• Punta Cana and Bávaro: 324 km, about 5 hours.
• La Romana: 234 km, about 4 hours.
• Puerto Plata: 230 km, about 4 hours.

The local roads on the peninsula are winding and slower than the motorway figures suggest, which is why Las Terrenas and Las Galeras, close on the map, still take about an hour.

From Punta Cana

This is the question we get most, so the answer in full. There is no boat from Punta Cana to Samaná or to Cayo Levantado: the trip is by road to the pier in Santa Bárbara, and from there by boat. The drive is long, around 324 kilometres, and the island of Cayo Levantado is open to visitors from 9:00 to 17:00, so the day starts early.

If you would rather make your own way to the pier, that works too; in that case we only need to agree the boarding time.

From Santo Domingo

From the capital, the Autopista del Nordeste takes you to the peninsula in about 3 hours of estimated driving, tolls included. From Las Américas airport it is a similar distance. The day trip is possible, but the island’s hours are what set the schedule: leaving the capital early is what makes it work. If you are arriving on a flight into Santo Domingo and heading straight to Samaná, add the airport-to-motorway time to the estimate.

From the El Catey airport

The peninsula has its own airport, the Aeropuerto Internacional Presidente Juan Bosch, usually called El Catey, with the code AZS. It sits at the western end of the peninsula, in the municipality of Sánchez. From there to the pier is about 47 kilometres and roughly an hour, along the Boulevard Turístico del Atlántico and then across to the bay side. From Puerto Plata and the north coast

From Puerto Plata the road runs east along the north coast and then into the peninsula: about 230 kilometres and around 4 hours of estimated driving. It is a full day of travel for a day on the water, so most people staying on the north coast either stay a night on the peninsula or plan the boat trip for a day when they are already here.

Once you are on the peninsula: getting to the pier

From Las Terrenas, Las Galeras and El Limón, the pier is a drive of roughly an hour or less across the peninsula. From Sánchez it is about 40 minutes along the bay. The pier is in the town of Santa Bárbara de Samaná; the exact meeting point and the boarding time are something we agree with you over WhatsApp when you book, because they depend on the trip and on the day.

Whatever your trip, it helps to arrive with a margin. Boats leave on the sea’s schedule and on the island’s hours, not on the road’s, and a late arrival cannot always be absorbed.

Where does this leave you

If you are staying on the peninsula, any of our trips is a normal day out with an hour or less of driving on either end. If you are coming from Santo Domingo, it is a long day with an early start.
